On February 15th 1942, the island of Sumatra was invaded by the Japanese. This island was vitally important for the Japanese to carry out their planned advanced to Java. Standing in their way were a handful of pilots and their Hurricane planes, a few ground defencemen from various Allied countries, and, the much underestimated native troops. They held off the Japanese at the Battle of Palembang, Sumatra. That the island fell is history; but, what is not well known is the Battle, and, how a few troops stopped the advance of the Japanese troops, allowing evacuation of the island of the majority of the most vulnerable.
