The alphabetically arranged items are usually followed by bibliographies but sometimes by cross-references to related items that do have bibliographies.
 
This book is based on a lifetime of attention to the meaning, characteristics, and development of nationalism. Its entries are designed to give a succinct summary without annoying detail on many aspects of this important historical force. Ideas on nationalism are presented without taking sides on the historical controversies that surround the subject. Attention is given to a wide range of scholars. To avoid the extension of this book into many volumes, each entry is condensed into a brief space, but a short bibliography is appended to each one for additional consultation. In some cases, I have drawn upon my previously published work in presenting factual material (The author).
